Most likely your audio interruption is caused by a problem with your Headphone Jack Plug.

Sometimes it's the simple things that count. With all the complicated circuitry and programs going on inside today's audio capable gadgets, it may be the common headphone jack that causes the most problems. A set of headphones and the headphone jack gives us the capability auditory interaction with today's popular electronic devices. Depending on the type, a headphone jack costs anywhere from a fraction of a dollar to a few dollars. That is why it can be very frustrating when you realize you may have paid hundreds of dollars for an electro-gadget that does not work because of a relatively cheap!

The term headphone jack or headphone plug refers to both male and female metal connectors that come in various sizes. The most common sizes are a 6.35mm or 1/4 "jack, 3.5mm miniature jack and a 2.5mm sub-miniature jack. The malfunction of a simple headphone jack can be a big headache.

There are a few different causes for its malfunction. The female part of a headphone jack is most prone to causing a failure because it us an opening into the inner circuitry of any device that has one. Allowing sand, dust or water to get inside could cause a problem. Some of today's latest audio devices have a "moisture" detection sensor. If liquid or excessive moisture gets inside the headphone jack, a small LED light will change from white to red to indicate unacceptable moisture levels. Such indication may cause the device to shut down in an attempt to avoid further damage. Another common cause of headphone jack failure is a bad connection do to the spreading of the internal metal contacts. This is the reason for most repair requests or returns for MP3s, cell phones and iPods. It has been noted as one of the most discouraging problems for audio technicians. Technicians have stated that it is a shame that such beautifully designed devices fail because of a jack malfunction.

So, what can be done to avoid and / or repair a problem with headphone jacks? If you think dirt or dust got into the jack, you could try blowing out the jack hole. You can blow into the hole yourself or buy a can of compressed air commonly sold in electronic and computer stores that are made specifically for cleaning electronic devices. If you think liquid or moisture got into the hole, just let it sit for a while in a dry warm place for a couple of days, the device might dry out and begin working properly. If none of these works and your device is under warranty, send it back to the manufacturer for repair.

Although not recommended, you could try a do it yourself fix. To do this, remove the cover of your device. This may require you to remove a number of screws around the perimeter of the cover. If you have soldering skills you can remove the old solder from the jack by heating up the old solder with a soldering gun and tabbing it off with a toothpick. Then apply new solder using proper soldering technique. If you do not know how to solder try cleaning jack connectors with an alcohol swab. Test your device to see if it works. If not, you may want to re-solder the connections. Soldering properly requires some skill.

If all of the above methods do not resolve your jack problem, your best bet may be to send it back to the manufacturer for a repair. Follow the instructions in your user manual for the repair process. But there are ways to avoid problems with your headphone jacks. Be gentle when inserting the male jack into the female receptor. Angling when injecting may cause the female connectors to spread, thus causing a loose connection, which may require constant jiggling. Use device clips to secure your device to your belt or pocket to avoid pulling on the jack if your device falls or is pulled.

Sometimes the best way to avoid jack damage is prevention. Some devices come with jack covers but others do not. If you have a device that does not have a headphone jack cover you can buy one at your electronics store or go on-line and search for "headphone jack cover". Protect your investment, avoid dust and moisture and get a cover if you do not have one.

You've been dating the man long enough to know you like him. You really,
really like him. Heck, you might even love him.

Fear not. All is not lost.

Remain calm. Do not, I repeat, do not dissolve into tears (I'm
begging you here).

Look him in the eye. Manage a chuckle and say, "Wow. How embarrassing."

Either way, you win. If he loves you, great. But if he does not, that's

Understanding correct anchoring techniques will save you a great deal of time and heartache. Knowing how and where to anchor is a vital component of safe boating. Remember, safe boating saves lives, and it is the captain's responsibility to ensure the safety of his / her crew. Below are some essential anchoring tips that you should adhere to next time you are out on your boat.

Firstly, always have your anchor at the ready. Although it is primarily used for when you want to stop, sometimes you may need to use it in an emergency situation where you must stop. You should wash your anchor and rope down after each trip and ensure that it is coiled in such a way that it will not become tangled when released. Be sure to keep an eye on the condition of the rope and replace it at the first sign of damage.

Anchors can be made of either all chain, or mostly rope with a meter or two of chain at the end. The importance of the chain is that it gives the anchor weight which will help it get to the ocean floor. The chain also helps guide the line of the anchor horizontal and acts as a shock absorber.

The weather conditions will guide you as to how much line you need to release to successfully anchor. The scope is a measure of how far across the line travels for how far it goes down. For example, a scope of 3: 1 indicated the anchor line is travelling 3M (9 foot) across for every 1M (3 foot) down in depth. A scope of 3: 1 is the minimum required for safe anchoring. A scope of 5: 1 should be used in moderate conditions and if it is rough a minimum scope of 8: 1 should be used.

When choosing a suitable site to anchor, you should first find out what conditions your anchor is designed for. Some anchors are designed for sandy bottoms whilst others are designed more for reef areas. As a general rule a sand patch is always best to anchor on. Try to stay away from grassy patches as the anchor may slip, you may get snagged or you may cause environmental damage to the sea floor. Remember to never anchor on coral.

Before releasing the anchor point the boat upwind and either reverse or let the wind push the boat backwards. As this is happening guide (do not throw) the anchor in to the water. Be careful not to get entangled up in the rope as this could cause serious injury. Once the anchor is in the water be sure to keep your hands clear and let the anchor sink to the bottom (do not let the rope pass through your hands). Once the adequate line length is out, be sure to fully secure the rope. It is vital to fully secure the rope otherwise the rope may coil out completely and you will drift away from your chosen site (and you will have lost your anchor).

Once anchored up, be sure to find some landmarks to monitor your position so that you can observe if you are drifting. Take two points that line up and keep checking to ensure they keep lining up, as if they do not you are drifting. Never assume that just because your anchor is down that you are not drifting as the anchor can drag along the sea floor if it is not firmly imbedded in. If you do start to drift, try letting more line out to increase the scope.

When retrieving the anchor, use your winch if fitted. If not, slowly drive the boat forward whilst bringing the line in so the boat does some of the work. Remember if you are doing this to keep the line tight so it does not drift behind and get caught up in the motor. If the anchor gets snagged, let more line out and try approaching the anchor from a different direction. You can also slowly reverse the boat to try to un-snag the anchor as well.

Safe anchoring is just one small part of safe boating. Be sure to study, learn and practice safe boating practices and you are sure to have many years of successful and happy boating.

Today's electric scooters are not your Dad's scooters of old – they're hip, economical and "Green" modes of transportation. Electric scooters have a range of about 60 miles, a 3-5 hour charge time, and a top speed of just over 60 miles per hour. What a relief to "scoot" past the Pain at the Pump, while reducing noise and air pollution at the same time!

However, why should you want one, you ask! There are countless reasons, but I promised you the "Top Three." Here goes:

1. Never fear Gas Shortages! In the aftermath of Hurricane Ike those of us in states that did not get a direct hit still felt its fury at the gas pump! With refineries in the Gulf Coast being damaged and pipe lines down, we in the Southeast of the nation had gas supplies dwindle to nothing! No fuel was to be found, and gas stations ran dry. News reporters would broadcast where a fuel truck was expected to make a delivery, and people would flock to that one lone station – with lines stretching at times up to a mile. As in any panic situation, tempers flared and chaos ensued. Police were called in to patrol gas stations and keep the peace. But the people were desperate – they had to get back and forth to work, so many waited in lines for up to 2 hours or so – and even then, there was no guarantee that the pump would still be running when their turn finally came. We in Atlanta endured these fuel shortages for about one month. I vowed, "Never again." With an electric scooter, you never have to be at the mercy of bad weather or the gas pump again. Just charge your scooter for 3 to 5 hours, and you can motor about 60 miles or so with no waiting in line for hours!

2. Never Fear Gas Prices! Now let's take the situation above and say you waited in line for those 2 hours and were fortunate enough to get gas. Well, you feel like you won the lottery, right! You'd better have won the lottery – with gas anywhere from $ 4.20 a gallon up to over $ 5.00 per gallon in some areas- you'd need the winnings just to pay the tab. On one hand, you are just grateful you found the gas – but on the other, you have just spent the equivalent one-week's worth of groceries for a tank of gas! With an electric scooter, the cost to operate it is less than 25% of the cost to run a gasoline-powered motor vehicle. Imagine the savings. The scooter charges in about 3- 5 hours (running about 40 cents per "fill up") which averages out to about a penny per mile! It is brilliant.

3. Hug a Tree! Finally, my new motto is "Park your car, and help save the environment." The planet wins hand down with the electric scooter – scooter emissions are about 1 / 10th that of the Hybrid Prius and about a whooping 1 / 30th of an SUV. (The power plant that charges the scooter generates the emissions. The scooter has no actual emissions!) It probably will not become your main means of transportation, of course, but for those quick trips around town or to the city, take the scooter and erase one more carbon footprint.

You never again have to be held hostage by unforeseen weather emergencies that threaten the fuel supply, while at the same time; you can run your scooter for pennies a mile, scooting past the pain at the pump When you throw in the ecological advantages of using your scooter as opposed to a gas-powered engine, you have the Trifecta of reasons why you, too, should own a Electric Scooter. It will be a Win-Win situation for your wallet and the Environment.

While the drastic effects of global warming has been discussed in many scientific circles, had their run on TV and even had major exposure through well-meaning (but sadly inaccurate) Hollywood films, it's a concern that has a broad political, economic, social and geographical significance to countries all over the world. Quite literally, for all of us, there is nowhere to hide, nowhere to run and we can not stop the climate from changing. It's just way too big for us.

How to recognize global warming
Whether or not it's brewing something good or something bad, Nature always tries to warn us through many signs. The slow process involved in global warming results in many different things and some of its signs include:

Melting of glaciers
Most of the mountain glaciers on our planet that have been monitored for the past 150 years are reportedly shrinking. The glaciers most affected by global warming those located in the lower latitudes and many of them are disappearing. If glaciers continue to shrink, it could affect water supply in areas that depend heavily upon mountain watersheds.

If the scenarios of global warming continue, most of the glaciers that still stand today will disappear by 2100.

Ocean warming
Sea level increase is attributed to warmer temperatures, which in turn result to the melting of ice glaciers. Over the last 100 years, sea level has increased from 10 cm to 25 cm. Projections over the next hundred years indicate that sea level will rise higher, from about 15 cm to 90 cm. Based on the higher figure, that's about 3 feet.

Translated, this could mean that beaches lose about 50 feet of area for every foot of increase in sea level. Some islands may even disappear beneath sea water completely.

Heat waves
Heat waves and periods of weather that are unusually warm are also signs of global warming. These may come about with varying degrees of their severity and frequency, causing concerns in the economics and health on a global scale.

How global warming brings climate change and what it means to us
The earth's climate has always been changing, although not at an abrupt rate. There had been periods of warming and cooling in the earth's 4.65 billion-year history. Strange as it may sound to some, this is the reason why life became possible on this planet millions of years ago. Unfortunately, not all of the changes in climate brought about by global warming may be beneficial to many of us.

For one, global warming will raise the temperatures in some regions of the Northern Hemisphere, causing the melting of mountain glaciers. This means that areas that are currently experiencing light snow may no longer experience snowfall anymore. Snowlines found in mountains in temperate regions may also be higher and packs of snow will melt earlier than before.

Spring may be experienced earlier and temperatures during night time and in winter will rise. The world will experience a more humid atmosphere since sea water will have a higher rate of evaporation. With greater humidity, rainfall is expected to increase on average.

Storms will also occur with more frequency and intensity. Ironically, water in the soil will evaporate faster, causing dryness between rains. Regions that are already considered dry will experience more dryness. Some semi-arid regions in the African continent, for example, may suffer more while areas that depend on their region's mountain snow packs for irrigation will not benefit from earlier melting between growing seasons.

With warmer weather, some hurricanes will be more severe and winds are expected to blow stronger. It is also possible that wind patterns may shift. Extremely cold periods may be experienced as well.

The phenomenon known as El Nino may occur in more frequency and severity. This is expected to affect different regions in many countries. All in all, scientists will have some difficulty in predicting weather patterns.

With changes in climate brought about by global warming, health concerns and risks may also increase. Heat stress and diseases may become common in places that did not have any problems with them before.

Global warming is an issue that requires immediate action. Even plants and animal species are adversely affected by it. While many of the changes that occur in our planet are totally out of our hands, we have been direct contributors to events that have had negative effects on our environment. This is why many leading social and scientific organizations have urged nations to cooperate in the move to counter this worldwide problem before it's too late.

They call Global Warming skeptics "anti-science." The term is a misnomer, however, because the skeptics are not actually against science, they are merely skeptical of the claims of its believers. Here are some reasons for their skepticism:

• Apocalyptic forecasts. Future climate forecasts for virtually every region in the world tend to be apocalyptic in nature. If you live in a dry area, it will only get drier. Areas of tremendous precipitation will only get rainier. More flooding will inundate areas prone to flooding; more heavy winter snowfalls will blanket areas traditionally hit with heavy winter snowfalls. Even in the short-term, nothing ever improves. You might assume that growing seasons in Siberia or Canada might lengthen due to warming, and they might receive bountiful harvests for a few decades. Perhaps the Sahara Desert will receive more rain and transform into a more hospitable savannah. Such changes are never predicted. Instead, we hear nothing but catastrophic scenarios. In my opinion, this is intentionally designed to frighten the public into action. It is understandable for politicians to engage in such hyperbole since most politicians tend to stretch or exaggerate the truth but scientists should be above spewing pseudoscience.

• Scientific neutrality. Scientists claim to be neutral, speak only the truth, and are above personal politics. Ironically, this can not be the case, since I have heard scientists who accept Climate Change label scientists who question Climate Change as dishonest or tools of Big Oil or Big Tobacco (yes, Big Tobacco! They just can not kill enough children with their cigarettes, so now they want to destroy the entire planet!). Skeptics sometimes point to a late snowstorm or cold spell as evidence against Global Warming. Climatologists, meteorologists, and other scientists denounce such evidence, explaining that one atypical storm or weather event does not disprove a climate theory. They are correct. Unusual local or regional weather incidents and climate are not necessarily connected. In addition, Climate Change will transpire over decades, and may not be observable over a season, a year, or even several years. However, when defenders of Climate Change use that very same storm as evidence to confirm their scientific beliefs, the scientific community is eerily silent. An impartial and honest scientist would be as quick to denounce the latter claim as well as the former. However, their silence, along with the apocalyptic scenarios mentioned above, demonstrates that many scientists are as inconsistent and biased as the skeptical scientists and non-scientists they condemn.

• Climate Change is responsible for everything. Whether it is Tropical Storm Sandy, Hurricane Katrina, or a brutal winter blizzard, all are attributed to Climate Change. A cool day in the middle of summer? A warm day in the middle of winter? Sleet? Wind? Freezing rain? There is no need to accept unseasonable weather, blame God, or even indict "Mother Earth", because Climate Change is the real perpetrator. Some also attribute tsunamis, earthquakes, and volcanic activity to Climate Change. Apparently, none of these "natural events" ever occurred before man-induced (anthropogenic) Climate Change. Incidentally, this all-encompassing culpability is the reason they altered the name from Global Warming to Climate Change. It allows its promoters to blame any "act of God", unwelcome weather, or abnormally cold weather on man's activities.

• Storm damage and lost lives. Every blizzard, hurricane, or major storm takes a tragic toll on human life. Everyone grieves for the loss of life, and we should continue to do all we can to minimize these seemingly senseless deaths. However, all claims that storms are becoming costlier and deadlier is deceptive. Real estate in general is worth more today than it was decades ago. Buildings and structures also cost more, and construction often takes place in precarious areas, such as flood zones, near earthquake fault lines, or even below sea level near the ocean. In addition, population has increased significantly in a very short time. In the last fifty years, the US alone gained over 120 million more people; Canada and Australia's population has virtually doubled; the UK added nearly 10 million people; China and India's populations have swelled by over 600 million each; and the world has added over 4.5 billion MORE people. Any large storm will impose larger monetary damages and tragically take more lives, simply because the cost of real estate has increased and the world's population has grown.

• Carbon footprint. It is the epitome of hypocrisy when the wealthy fly private jets to global warming conferences, eco-conscious celebrities are chauffeured in gas-guzzling limousines to movie openings and award ceremonies, and performing artists fly and truckload staff and equipment from city to city on a worldwide tour, all the while preaching ecological platitudes during their performances. Perhaps when they heat, cool, and light their mansions with genuine renewable energy sources, and walk, ride bikes, or at least carpool to their destinations, skeptics will begin to believe. Whatever happened to leading by example? Imagine a rally to save a local park from development. Celebrities, politicians, and other speakers lament what would be the loss of pristine beauty. They call for the community to come together and do whatever it takes to save the park. After the rally ends, paper bags, empty water bottles, plastic bags, flyers, and other assorted debris litter the park. Would anyone really believe that the speakers and their supporters were serious? And why is it acceptable to exclude the rich and famous from practicing what they preach, simply by virtue of their position?

• Carbon Credits. This brings us to carbon credits. Paying a company to invest in green energy might be a sound investment; using that investment as an excuse to continue a carbon-profligate lifestyle is duplicitous. Many Climate Change leaders claim to be "carbon neutral" simply because they purchased carbon credits. The easiest way to see if this works is by asking a simple question. What if everyone bought carbon credits, technically became carbon neutral, but continued to live in disregard to their lifestyle? Clearly, this would accomplish very little in fighting Climate Change. We do not possess the technology for the entire world or even entire nations to become carbon neutral. Carbon credits are a way for very rich people to "buy" their way out of altering their lifestyles. This gives the impression of real sacrifice for the cause, and allows them to continue to denounce those who remain skeptical of Climate Change. During the American Civil War, the wealthy avoided fighting in the battles by paying a fee or finding a substitute. They may have contributed to the cause but everyone knows they did not participate in the actual fighting.

• Kyoto Treaty. During the Clinton Administration, the Kyoto Treaty failed to secure even a single vote in the US Senate. Among its many proposals, the Kyoto Protocol attempted to set worldwide standard carbon emissions. Not even "environmental senators" voted for it. Nearly all global greenhouse emission proposals exclude China (the largest "carbon polluter" country) and India, the two most populous countries in the world. The argument against their inclusion is primarily economics. Emission cuts will cripple their economies, leading to an increase in poverty. If this is true for China and India's economies, it is also true for other countries as well. In addition, proponents argue that those two countries, and Third World or Developing countries, should be exempted, because they did not cause the problem. Culpability lies with the Western industrial countries. Even if this is true, exempting countries from emissions only worsens the problem, since they will continue to emit greenhouse gasses. Is the goal to assuage our Western guilt or save the planet?

• Satellite evidence. Large storms recorded from weather satellites are visually impressive. Experts point to video of huge storms and claim that their enormous size reflects the impact of Climate Change. They make a similar argument with Arctic sea ice. Through satellites, we can now accurately measure the summer meltback of ice each year, and science can confirm that the polar ice cap has shrunk in the past few decades. However, while these observations might indicate a change in climate, according to NASA, the first successful Geosynchronous Satellite was launched in 1964. Polar satellites did not exist until the 1970s. We simply do not possess any satellite data before that time. Thus, from a climate perspective, most of this scientific information and observation, while valid, is very recent.

• Al Gore. It certainly does not help a scientific movement when the person most associated with that undertaking is a politician. No doubt, people hold different opinions about the politics and personality of former Vice President Al Gore. But what is not debatable is that he possesses no scientific training. I would also argue that he does not understand scientific argument or method, and it is unparalleled chutzpah when he questions the scientific expertise of those who disagree with him. If having a former politician like Al Gore as the face of fighting Climate Change does not bother you, then imagine that face is Dick Cheney, Tony Blair, John Howard, Stephen Harper, or even Sarah Palin.

• Transfer of Wealth. It also does not help the cause of Climate Change when there is official discussion at the international level about the transfer of wealth from the wealthy countries to the poorer countries. Remember, the stated objective of Climate Change fighters is to lower carbon emissions worldwide. That goal is sensible and desirable. However, transferring money from one group to another is social engineering, and once again an attempt to placate Western guilt. It certainly has little to do with lowering world carbon emissions.
